In Wutai, Pingtung, the millet of the Rukai people is far more than just a source of food—it is the very root of their culture. It serves as a traditional dowry in weddings, a sacred offering in rituals, and a vital link between the tribe and the rhythms of nature. However, over the past few decades, this connection had gradually begun to sever. Fortunately, through a cross-disciplinary collaborative initiative, the millet has finally found its way back home.


Why Does the Millet Need to

In 1977, American scholar Wayne Fogg took indigenous millet germplasm abroad for preservation. Decades later, through the dedicated efforts of Professor Kuo Hua-Jen and Ba Ching-Hsiung, Assistant Professor of the Department of Sociology at National Sun Yat-sen University, a total of 96 native Taiwanese millet varieties returned from the United States to Taiwan. This marked the beginning of the highly symbolic "Millet Coming Home" initiative. This movement represents far more than the simple return of an agricultural crop—it is a profound act of cultural revival.


Under the guidance of National Sun Yat-sen University’s USR (University Social Responsibility) project, "The Golden City of Misty Forests," the Wutai villages of Kudradranu (Kucapungane/Guchuan), Kabalelradhane (Shenshan), and Wutai have replanted these millets. Combined with mixed-cropping practices and the revitalization of fallow land, they are awakening traditional farming culture. This cultural recultivation movement has not only drawn the participation of local youths and students but has also invited tribal elders to teach alongside them, transforming the farmland into a vibrant, cross-generational space for shared learning.

Using Data to Accompany Culture Back to the Land

In 2025, AgriWeather partnered with Professor Ba Ching-Hsiung and the National Sun Yat-sen University team to participate in the Wutai millet recultivation initiative. AgriWeather installed time-lapse cameras and multi-functional sensors—which record air temperature, air humidity, solar radiation, soil temperature, soil moisture, and electrical conductivity (EC)—across three different altitudes within the tribal villages.


This data helps the community "see their own rhythms" and establishes a long-term record of harmonious cohabitation with the environment:

  • Visuals of flowing time transform farming methods into educational materials that can be passed down through generations.
  • Sensor data serves as the foundation for understanding farming challenges under shifting climate conditions.
  • Recording tools act as technological facilitators that empower young people returning to their hometowns.

Planting the Seeds of Culture and Technology: Three Major Qualitative Benefits Emerge

Although the project has been underway for only half a year and has yet to yield complete data on crops and economic benefits, significant initial changes have already emerged:

  1. Heightened Local Engagement
    • More tribal youths and residents have begun to pay closer attention to smart agriculture. Through observation and exchange, they are learning about sensors and data-recording methods, laying a solid foundation for their subsequent participation.
  2. Enrichment of Academic Research and Fieldwork
    • Students and research teams, both from within and outside the university, view the millet recultivation as a living classroom. By integrating regional revitalization, climate action, and cultural studies, the project has driven an increase in field-based courses, research reports, and exploratory site visits.
  3. Systematic Preservation of Cultural Heritage
    • Through data collection and visual archiving, the subtle nuances and stories of traditional farming methods are being systematically preserved. This provides brand-new source material and innovative methodologies for future cultural research and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
Although these results have yet to be quantified into economic data, they have already injected vital momentum into cultural revitalization and deeply rooted educational efforts.
